Projects 2012
Projects at the Patna/River Estate Government Primary School are done both school wide and by individual classes. The school project for the September to December term "Our National Heroes" culminated with an Open Day Presentation on Friday November 9th 2012.
The "TWO FIRSTS"
(A project by Standard 1s)
The Standard One Level assumed the mammoth task of researching and presenting two National Icons/Heroes. As a result, we decided to name our project "THE TWO FIRSTS". Icons that we chose are a part of the most elite group of leaders coming out of Trinidad & Tobago.
Dr. Eric Eustace Williams, renowned intellectual-historian and outstanding footballer, as well as the Father of Our Nation earned that title because he beacme the First Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago when we gained Independence from England in 1962.
"Breaking Ground" to become the First Female Prime Minister is Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bisessar. She was also the first female Attorney General of this country.
Essentially, this project celebrated the lives of these exemplars. It was an eye-opener for our Standard One students whose knowledge of our first prime minister was limited.
On Presentation Day the beautifully decorated Standard 1 area was opened for visitors. The vibrant gold, orange and red colours emphasised the cultural theme for our Divali Celebrations that same day, as well as the religious orientation of our current Prime Minister. Students fully explained the contributions that these icons made to the development of our nation. They also presented art and craft that reflected nation building, as well as a song 'She's Royal' originally done by Tarrus Riley. It was an enjoyable learning experience for all Standard 1 students. From this exercise, it was clear that with hard work success is inevitable. We, the teachers of Standard 1 believe that our project was indeed successful because we met all our objectives.
Thank you for visiting our booth and making our project successful.

Sporting Heroes
Project Theme: Sporting Heroes
In keeping with the theme of the School's Project for September - December 2012 "Heroes of Trinidad & Tobago, Ms Modeste's class focussed on and researched Sporting Heroes of Trinidad and Tobago. Students were placed into groups and were given the authority to chose their heroes. Group 1 chose Keshorn Walcott; Group 2 Ato Boldon and Group 3 Hasley Crawford.
Each group researched the hero selected and was actively engaged in synthesising the information obtained. This information was displayed in the form of a portfolio. Integration of subjects was also an important component. For example Study Skills and Art & Craft with gave students the strategies they needed to undertake this educational task.

OUR NATIONAL HERO: PAST- PRESIDENT NOOR HASSANALI
The Standard Four Melville class chose to do their research project on this country's second president: Mr Noor Hassanali. It is the opinion of this class that Mr. Hassanali was undoubtedly the most dignified president of our country thus far.
The pupils,-especially the males were delighted to learn about Mr. Hassanali's prowess in sports, and in particular football.
Some of Mr. Hassanali's academic and professional achievements include being a lawyer, a Magistrate, Senior Magistrate, Senior Crown Counsel, Assistant Solicitor General, High Court Judge and Court of Appeal Judge. All this before he was appointed to the Presidency in 1987.
His accomplishments have served as motivators for all the students who aspire to exceed exxpectations.

STANDARD 4 (JOSEPH) NATIONAL HEROES
DISPLAY
Our National Heroes display was three-fold;
it consisted of individual students’ booklets, whole-class display and national symbols.
Each student selected a national hero, based
on his/her personal preference. They were given an overview and criteria of who can qualify to be a national hero. The heroes ranged from: Brian Lara and Keshorn Walcott to Wendy Fitzwilliams and Daisy Voison. They were then guided to research information on the selected hero, for which they each compiled a booklet. The booklets varied in shape, color and content.
Additionally, as a class, the students selected local (born in Patna) hero- Carlos Edwards as their class hero. They all gathered information on him- they brainstormed about the manner of presentation to be to be used with this information. They were put into small groups which worked on sub-areas of the “Carlos Edwards” display. They designed the posters and summarised the information themselves. The class also opted to showcase some of the nation’s national symbols (birds, flower etc) as well as the present President
and Prime Minister.

Standard 2 Foster-Henry & Hercules Class Project : our national heroes
This term in keeping with the celebration and jubilation of our country Trinidad and Tobago being recognised in sport at the London 2012 Olympic,s our class looked at Keshorn Walcott as a national hero. In an attempt to satisfy the needs of the Social Studies and HFLE curriculum we researched and discussed Keshorn’s place of residence which is Toco. We looked at his participation, commitment and dedication as he prepared himself through the field events of the World Junior Championships and the CARIFTA Games over the last three years. All of which brought him to a state of readiness for the Olympic Gold in 2012.
The Standard Two Classes focused mainly on the national hero Keshorn Walcott and to a lesser extent other national heroes in sport, politics and music.
Students researched the life of Keshorn and his accomplishments as a whole class. This information was integrated into reading lessons through the Language Experience Approach, used in Comprehension passages, Creative Writing, Spelling and Social Studies. Students also learned the National song “God bless Our Nation” on the steelpan and researched information on the Javelin and how it should be used. One class created a big book of all the information they gathered including their Creative Writing pieces, while other classes created booklets on Keshorn Walcott.
In preparation for their class displays, students were further divided into peer groups to create posters on another national hero of their own choice. This opportunity allowed them to overcome obstacles of selfishness and develop values like co-operation and kindness, as well as communication skills. The highlight of our project was chiefly to emphasize to our students that they could be national heroes too. As such, they proudly explained and portrayed what they had learned during the term to students and visitors who came to view the display.

READY SET GO!!!
Hasley Crawford the first Gold Medal Olympian produced by Trinidad & Tobago was the feature of the Standard 3 project on our National Heroes.
The students, while they were familiar with the name Hasely Crawford Stadium named after a national icon, knew very little about this great man.
We focussed on what happened on that fateful day in 1976, as well as how the actions of Mr. Crawford impacted the lives of Trinbegonians. We researched the events of that day in Montrael 1976 for the benefit of the remainder of the student population.
On Project Presentation Day, at times the performance (in the format of a dramatised re-enactment of that day we made history) resembled a scene for "A Series of Unfortunate Events". :But Standard Three students rallied on, and those who visited our booth were heard to comment that we had some budding actors and actresses! Our visitors left educated and entertained.
In the end, students at this level learned that like Hasley Crawford, if they persevers, they too can accomplish great things in life, in addition to making invaluable contributions to the advancement of our nation.
